“A Woman’s Best Friend”

black and white painting of a woman holding two spears. She's standing in a mountainous area wearing an old-fashioned dress with hood and slightly smiling. Painted by Jeffcoat Art. Prints available.
Part of the Avalon fantasy series, this was painted in black and white acrylic on canvas.

Diamonds are pretty, but blades are forever. Give some love to the strong ladies in your life!

When I was a kid, I usually liked the bad ladies from Disney movies because they had more strength, more power. They were decisive and self-reliant. They had a plan. They had ambition. A shame, really, that those types of female characters couldn’t be the good guys. But I think that’s changing now. And that’s really great to see. I started my Avalon series back in 2006 with a painting called “Yule Night.” You can view this in the Fantasy gallery on the Home page. Marion Zimmer Bradley’s “The Mists of Avalon” kickstarted the whole thing and I’ve added quite a number of paintings to the series since then.

So, Yeah. I like strong women. I like smart asses, bad asses and deeply flawed women. Whether they’re in movies, TV shows or the books I read, those are the female characters that I am drawn to and I hope some of them come through in my paintings.
