3 Reasons Why You Should Try Out This Tutorial

How to create a stained glass effect with watercolor & ink

Hey guys!

It’s Christy from Jeffcoat Art with my next art tutorial. And I’ll give you 3 reasons why you should try this out in your free time…

REASON #1: It’s simple.

It’s so dang easy, you’ll be delightfully surprised when you’re done.

One of the biggest mental blocks people have when it comes to trying their hand at something creative, is that they don’t think they have the skill. Ever felt this way?

I have. Plenty of times (and I’m an artist).

These abstract watercolor inking tutorials that I’ve created are perfect for dipping your toes into the art pool. No experience required. Just paint whatever colors you want. Photorealism is not needed or wanted in these exercises. Then outline the shapes that the colors make in ink. Done!

REASON #2: It’s cheap.

Necessities: Watercolor paper, paint, 1 brush, and 1 pen. You can get away with spending about $32. Not bad, huh?

1. Watercolor Paper: https://www.amazon.com/Strathmore-298-103-Watercolor-Bound-Sheets/dp/B000KNNVYO/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1549313030&sr=8-2&keywords=watercolor+paper

2. Watercolor Paint: https://www.amazon.com/Staedtler-Learning-Development-8880-C24A6/dp/B00YZ3H68C

3. Watercolor Brushes: https://www.amazon.com/Grace-Water-Color-Brush-WS12/dp/B01IQFDF98

(You could probably go to an art/craft store and buy a single brush. Go for a large round brush if you do. Great versatility, holds more water, still allows for details).

4. Pen: https://www.amazon.com/Pilot-25001-Precision-Technology-Skip-Free/dp/B00347A8C6/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1549313254&sr=8-3&keywords=pilot+precise+v5+2+pack

Extra supplies lying around your house:

*wooden board/clipboard

*plate or empty egg carton instead of buying a paint tray

*masking tape

REASON #3: It’s fun.

Because this art project requires no skill or experience, there’s no pressure! We’re not painting the Mona Lisa here, we’re just having fun with color. And trust me, you’ll have fun.

I specialized in black and white paintings for a very long time and I am now exercising my color muscles. I’ll admit, it’s a bit intimidating.

I don’t feel super confident in my ability to pick color schemes that look nice. I’m probably being too critical of myself, but there it is. We all feel insecure when it comes to creating. That’s because it’s personal, it makes you vulnerable.

But these are all good things.

So, this weekend, I challenge you to give this tutorial a try. Grab a piece of watercolor paper. Use a small piece, if a large one intimidates you. Pick your colors and paint them. Go watch a TV show while it dries. Then start inking!

Happy Creating! P.S.- Can you find the fox in this inking?
